Dual Demand

Silver is driven by two forces: investment demand and industrial use. This article explains how they interact — and why they can make silver’s price volatile.

Investment Demand

Silver has long been seen as “gold’s more accessible cousin.” Individuals buy it as a physical asset, sometimes as a hedge against inflation or currency weakness. Unlike gold, which is widely held by central banks, silver investment demand comes mainly from individuals.

Investment demand for silver can rise sharply in uncertain times — and fall back just as quickly. With EONA, you can buy allocated silver recorded against specific bars, at a transparent price and a published commission.

Industrial Demand

Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any metal, which makes it important in:

  • Solar panels
  • Electric vehicles
  • Semiconductors
  • Medical instruments
  • 5G and consumer electronics

Over half of annual silver demand comes from industrial applications, according to The Silver Institute. The shift towards clean energy and electrification has increased this demand, but industrial demand also falls when economies slow.

Supply

Unlike gold, silver is mostly mined as a by-product of other metals such as copper, lead or zinc. This means supply doesn’t respond quickly to changes in silver demand, which can contribute to price swings in either direction.

The Silver Institute has reported several consecutive years in which demand exceeded mine and recycled supply. Such imbalances can change, and they do not guarantee higher prices.

What This Means for Buyers

Silver is both a precious metal and an industrial commodity. Its dual demand gives it two sets of drivers — which can also make it more volatile than gold.

EONA sells physical silver on an execution-only basis and does not give investment advice. The value of silver can fall.

Частые вопросы

  • Both matter. Industrial use accounts for the larger share of total demand, while investment flows can cause sharp short-term moves.
